Tropicana Gardens tips for your academic success…

Here is some information we think you ought to know regarding withdrawing from your courses at SBCC….

Did you know that March 23rd is the deadline to officially withdraw from a semester-length class?

Make the right decision by visiting your teacher during office hours to check your progress in the course.

If you withdraw from a semester-length class prior to this date, you will receive a “W” on your transcript. After this date, the instructor must give you an evaluative grade (A-F).

Here are some important things to take into consideration in making a decision to withdraw from a class:

- The UC and CSU systems are not concerned about W’s on your transcript and W’s will not affect your admission to those institutions

- If you are receiving financial aid, withdrawing from a class or earning a substandard grade could affect your benefit (check with your FA advisor)

- D’s and F’s are deficient grades and negatively affect your GPA. (Either can be retaken to improve your GPA. UC’s will take the better grade whereas privates and CSU’s vary in how they calculate the re-taken grade to your GPA)

- You cannot retake a B or a C to improve your GPA

- If you receive a W in a course, you do not have to retake it unless you need or want to

- W’s are not calculated into your GPA

- Some private institutions, such as USC, do not like to see more than one W on your transcript

- Excessive W’s shall be used as a factor in progress probation or progress disqualification at SBCC

- Withdrawing from a class will slow down your progress toward your educational goal whether it is transfer or an Associate degree

- You are not eligible for a refund

- It is your responsibility to withdraw from a course. Don’t expect the instructor to drop you even if you have not been attending class. You may withdraw online in pipeline or in person in Admissions and Records.

If you believe the best recourse is to stay in the class follow your instructor’s recommendations and utilize the student success resources. Here are the links to ongoing campus services:

· The Learning Skills Workshop Series at CAI Lab 2 in the LRC on Thursdays from 1:00-1:50 include building skills in test taking, managing stress and math confidence.

The Learning Skills Workshops at the Gateway Center (ECC 33) on Fridays from 1:10-2:00 pm include overcoming procrastination, test taking, study skills, problem solving and stress management.

· The Writing Center workshops help you develop skills and strategies that can be applied to writing in other classes such as editing, researching and citation.

· The Online Writing Library offers online learning support to improve writing skills.

· The “No F – Pass This Class” Campaign provides information about success strategies you can use to turn “F” grades around and excel in classes. Come to the Friendship Center…March 12th through the 15th from 11am to 1pm.

It’s beautiful in March at Tropicana Gardens!

It’s already March and we can’t help but feel as though time is flying by so quickly.  In order to make use of these last few months with all of you, RA’s have been working extremely hard at putting on great programs for you to enjoy with each other.

Also, several focus groups have taken place with Tropicana Gardens residents regarding the Trop Cafe and Tropicana in general, and we thank you for your input and attendance.  It is important to us that you know that your concerns and input are being heard and that you know we are doing our best to make changes and improvements as necessary and according to your collective input!

Selection for the 2012-2013  RA’s is coming to a close, and we cannot wait to reveal to you who the next group of leaders will be!  Stay tuned for more details, and take a look below for information about Spring Break closing procedures and past programming pictures!

There will be three Villas at Tropicana OPEN HOUSE events:

- Wednesday, March 14, 1:00-4:00 pm

- Sunday, March 18, 1:00-4:00 pm

- Tuesday, March 20, 1:00-4:00 pm

Come take a tour the Villas fully furnished 2-bedroom/2-bath apartments, geared toward continuing students. Amenities include a pool, rec room and on-site laundry. 10-Month Individual leases and 10 or 12-month Joint & Several leases are offered.

The Villas are located at 811 Camino Pescadero, one block towards the beach from Tropicana Gardens.

SPRING BREAK CLOSING PROCEDURES

Tropicana Gardens will be closed from

Friday, March 23, 2012 at 5:00 PM to Sunday, April 1, 2012 at 1:00 PM.

The last meal before Spring Break is lunch, on Friday, March 23, 2012.   Meals will resume with breakfast on Monday, April 2, 2012.

Prior to leaving Tropicana Student Housing for the break, you must complete the following:

_____ Remove all trash from the suite.

_____ Close all windows and blinds.

_____  Lock all windows.

_____ Turn down the heater (NOT the pilot light/Tropicana Gardens).

Turn down the thermostat (Tropicana Del Norte)

_____ Unplug all electrical plugs (including computers, alarm clocks,

stereos, etc) with the exception of aquariums, answering machines and

refrigerators.

_____ Remove all perishable food from the suite.  You do not need to defrost refrigerators.  Note: If you choose to, please defrost it properly in order to avoid a fee.

_____ Remove all valuables (optional).

_____ Please make sure that your bedroom door is locked and left open (if you choose to lock your bedroom). Staff will close the locked bedroom door behind them after they have inspected the room.  NOTE: be sure there is a copy of your personalized bedroom key at the front desk.  If not, a fee may be assessed.

_____ Be sure that proper maintenance repairs have been made to your suite.  If there are any damages to the suite, repairs may be made by Tropicana Housing maintenance staff at your expense over the break.

_____   HAVE THE LAST PERSON TO LEAVE THE SUITE HANG THIS    NOTICE IN THE WINDOW.

Tropicana Housing Staff will inspect all suites after everyone in the suite has vacated the building.

If any of the above items are not completed, a fee may be assessed.  Also, please remember that any items found in suites that are contrary to Tropicana Housing policies will be documented & responded to accordingly.  Upon closing the building, your Salto key will not allow suite access until 1pm on Sunday, April 1, 2012.

Cupcake and cookie decorating in the Tropicana Gardens Rec Room was a ton of fun.  Sometimes it is the smallest and most basic of programs which are the most fun and remind you most of home.  We are glad you all attended and hopefully left with a full belly of sweets!

Did you catch the Academy Awards?!  Tropicana Gardens residents sure did.  At the Oscars party, residents watched The Artist win big while enjoying pizza and cupcakes.  It was so much fun hanging out with you all!

It’s beautiful this March at Tropicana Del Norte!

You Speak and We Listen!
Here are the Survey & Focus Group Results…

Thanks to all of you who filled out surveys about the Trop Café and your experience living at Tropicana Del Norte. 96% of you rated your Overall Trop Experience as “good” to “excellent”!

We also conducted a Focus Group last week with a random sampling of our residents. Our Focus Group mentioned that they would like more bacon for breakfast, so the Trop Café will now serve bacon three times a week. In response to requests, there will be fish on the menu twice a week. You’ll also notice the soups will be hotter, and there will be more variety to the soups. The Café will also have a lunch item on the weekend brunch line. Between lunch and dinner, more potato chips, Fritos or pretzel snacks will be added to the salad and deli bar.

Tropicana is always improving. With our new StarRez program, our package system will automatically e-mail you when you have a package at our Front Desk! We are phasing out our “package slip” system, so be sure to check your mailbox for any package slips that may have come in before January 9, when we implemented the new software module. Now, when you wish to retrieve your package, simply come to the Front Desk after receiving your e-mail alert, tell the Desk Attendant your name,and  they will retrieve your package and have you sign for it on the daily package list.

Have you heard about the new Package Pick-up Program?

Tropicana is always improving. With our new StarRez program, our package system will automatically e-mail you when you have a package at our Front Desk! We are phasing out our “package slip” system, so be sure to check your mailbox for any package slips that may have come in before January 9, when we implemented the new software module. Now, when you wish to retrieve your package, simply come to the Front Desk after receiving your e-mail alert, tell the Desk Attendant your name, thy will retrieve your package and have you sign for it on the daily package list.
